This is the exact amount of exercise you need to keep your brain in good shape

This is the exact amount of exercise you need to keep yur brain in good shapeThis is the exact amount of exercise you need to keep your brain in good shapeWhether we like it or not, exercise is so good for us. It helps keeps us healthy, both mentally and physically, and studies show that it also helps us stay productive, creative and smart. But how much exercise does one need to keep their brain at high functioning levels? Must I go to spin class everyday or can I do a lazy treadmill run some days? Well, luckily we now have the answer to the amount of exercise we need to keep our brain health thanks to new research.A newstudy published in the journalNeurology, written by Joyce Gomes-Osman, an assistant professor in physical therapy and neurology at University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, looked at 100 existing studies that connected exercise with more than 122 different tests of brain function. Then looking at the data of 11,000 older people who had mild cognitive impairment o r dementia, the magic number they came up with was that people who exercised about 52 hours over a period of about six months showed the biggest improvements on their cognitive tests. The magic number or is it?This comes out to exercising for an hour about three times a week. The people who kept up with this amount of exercise showed the most improvements on their tests when it came to speed, problem solving and processing information. However Osman says that even though it came out to around 52 hours, it isnt that exact.I dont think 52 hours is really a magic number, says Gomes-Osman. There really is a range. But I do think that these results signify to us that in order to get the known benefits of exercise for the brain, to help areas involved in thinking and problem solving - to get that machinery going, you need longer exposure to exercise. Those are all mechanistic processes that take time to develop. The researchers were surprised that they didnt find any correlations between i mprovements in thinking and the frequency, intensity or length of time of the exercises the subjects did. In other words, you dont have to do a tri-athalon to reap the benefits for your brain. Just keep the body moving and the blood flowing.

Tips for Implementing Employee Furlough

Tips for Implementing Employee Furlough Tips for Implementing Employee Furlough Employee furloughs are mandatory time off work with no pay. The goal is to save money for the company by lowering employee salary expenses. While employee  furloughs can be a positive alternative to layoffs, they have negative consequences, too. Who Uses Employee Furloughs? Employee furloughs can occur in public- as well as private-sector organizations when revenue or projected revenue fails to match expenses. Revenue is generated through product sales, grants, and governmental support and subsidies. Some companies have regular furloughs. For instance, a lawn care company might shut down after fall cleanups are done and not reopen until spring. However,  seasonal work isnt the only time  when furloughs can occur. When a factory has difficulty getting suppliers to provide enough materials, it may make sense for the company to go on furlough rather than to continue to pay employees who cannot make the product. How Is an Employee Furlough Different From a Layoff? In mandatory employee furloughs, employees take unpaid or partially paid time off of work for periods of time. The employees generally have either scheduled time off or call-back rights and expectations. In a layoff, employees generally have no rights of recall and no expectation of the job returning. In a furlough, employees are usually given a time frame- although this sometimes changes, especially in a product shortage situation. To schedule employees with a contract for a furlough, including union-represented employees, employers must renegotiate the contract. Negotiations about employee furloughs generally include a call-back date. Examples of employee furloughs include closing a business for two weeks, reducing employee time on the job to three weeks a month instead of four, and asking employees to take two days a month off without pay. Employees have also been put on furloughs indefinitely. What Happens to Employee Benefits? During employee furloughs, benefits usually continue, which is one of the ways in which employee furloughs are distinguished from a layoff, where benefits generally end either at the last day of work or at the end of the month. Some companies extend benefits as a part of severance packages. Some  states have implemented  work-sharing  programs. Work sharing is an unemployment insurance  (UI) program that allows an employer to reduce the number of hours an employee  works during a week while  unemployment compensation  makes up some of the difference in income. This arrangement allows employees not to suffer as much financially in a furlough. When federal or state governments implement employee furloughs, the employees are usually paid for the time on furlough when the budget crisis is over. This, of course, is a bad deal for the taxpayers who must pay salaries for the time when no work was performed. Whats the No-Work Rule? In a furlough situation, its critical to enforce the no-work rule. Exempt employees who do no more than answer an email are entitled to a full days pay, so make the rules specific. Perhaps tell employees to leave their devices at the office or stop your servers from delivering email. This may seem drastic, but the point of a furlough is to save the organization money. You cant do that if you have to continue to pay people. A nonexempt employee who performs any work during the furlough must also be paid, but only for time actually worked. Final Tips on Employee Furloughs If youre considering implementing a furlough, make sure your communication is clear and consistent with employees. Dont talk about the need for cost savings by furloughing your hourly employees while the management team receives bonuses. The furlough should be perceived as a group effort. You need not furlough everyone, though. Furloughing the manufacturing team while the marketing team continues working could make sense in a situation when the company needs to build sales.

how to create a resume from scratch

how to create a resume from scratch how to create a resume from scratch Wondering how to write a great resume that will show off your skills and experience and get you interviews? Here’s a beginner’s guide to how to craft a resume that will catch a hiring manager’s eyes. Your resume should be composed of the following sections: Contact info. This is pretty straightforward â€" this is the header for your resume, and it’s where your name, address, phone number, and email address go. It’s fine to add a link your LinkedIn profile or your website if you want to, but don’t clutter this section up to much. Profile or highlights. This section is optional, but profiles or highlight sections have replaced objectives at the top of modern-day resumes. This is a quick list of the highlights of your strengths and accomplishments, summing up in just a few bullet points who you are as a candidate and what you have to offer. The idea is to provide an overall framing for your candidacy, setting the hiring manager up to see the rest of your resume through that lens. Experience: This is the meat of your resume. You should list each job (from most recent to least recent) â€" where you worked, what your title was, and the years you worked there. Underneath that, you should have a bulleted list of what you achieved while working there. And this is crucial: These bullets should not be used to just explain your job duties. Instead, you should focus on accomplishments â€" things you achieved that were simply fulfilling the basis duties of your job. For instance, instead of “managed website,” it’s far stronger to say something like, “increased Web traffic by 15% in six months” â€" in other words, explain how you performed, not just what your job was. When you’re deciding what to include, give yourself permission to remove things that don’t strengthen your candidacy. You don’t need three lines explaining boring, basic job duties â€" especially if these responsibilities are going to be implied by your title. Similarly, you don’t need to include that summer job from eight years ago, or that job you did for three weeks that didn’t work out. Your resume is a marketing document, not a comprehensive listing of everything about you, so include the things that strengthen your candidacy, and pare down the rest. Education: For most people, this section should just be a line or two, explaining where you went to school and what degree you graduated with. And note that generally your education should go beneath your work experience, because generally employers are most interested in what work experience you’ve had. Leading with your education just buries what will make most attractive to an employer. Optional other sections: After that, you might include some additional optional sections, like Volunteer Work (or Community Involvement), Skills (if not obvious from the experience section), or Miscellaneous. Fleshing out your skills and experience in these sections can demonstrate a passion for the work that your work experience can’t always do. For instance, if you’re applying for an I.T. position and you run an online software discussion group in your spare time, mention that. Or if you’re applying for a teaching job and you review children’s books for your website, that’s important to mention too. These types of details help paint a stronger picture of you as a candidate. Things not to include: Your resume is for experience and accomplishments only. Its not the place for subjective traits, like great leadership skills or creative innovator. Smart employers ignore anything subjective that applicant write about themselves because so many peoples self-assessments are wildly inaccurate, so your resume should stick to objective facts. Additional no-no’s: Don’t include a photo of yourself, information about your age, any mention of high school, medical conditions, or family members. Overall formatting: In all of the sections above, you should be using bullet points, not complete sentences. Hiring managers will only skim your resume initially, and big blocks of text are difficult to skim. An employer will absorb more information about you with a quick skim if your information is arranged in bullet points rather than paragraphs. Length: As a general rule, your resume shouldn’t be over two pages (or one, if you’re a recent grad). The longer your resume is, the less likely an employer is to see the parts you want them to see. The initial scan of your resume is about 20 seconds - do you want that divided among three pages, or do you want it focused on the most important things you want to convey? Short and concise means that employers are more likely to read the parts you most care about. Plus, long resumes can make you come across as someone who can’t edit and doesn’t know what information is essential and what’s less important. Design: Avoid unusual colors or untraditional designs. All most hiring managers want from a resume: a concise, easy-to-scan list of what you’ve accomplished, organized chronologically by position, plus any particularly notable skills, all presented in a format that they can quickly scan and get the highlights. How I learned to effectively manage my inbox for good

How I learned to effectively manage my inbox for good How I learned to effectively manage my inbox for good Last year around this time I pledged that I would finally  detox my inbox  and learn to manage my email once and for all. 365 days later, I’m happy to report I’ve changed for the better and haven’t looked back since! Here’s what I did to make the switch:1. Take advantage of Gmail tabsI rely on Gmail’s “Promotions” and “Social” tabs to keep the junk out of my main inbox every day. That way, when I have the time, I can choose to give those tabs a once-over. At least once a month I do a quick scan in case I’ve missed anything important (like a good sale on my favorite e-commerce sites) and just bulk delete the rest.I love these tabs for automated de-cluttering, but they only work as long as you drag anything you really enjoy reading (like Bossed Up emails, of course) to your priority inbox so you don’t miss the good stuff!2. Limit time in the inboxI used to have my inbox always open in a tab in my browser, but that was a huge distraction that made me susceptible to knee-jerk reactions instead of using email more intentionally. Now I only peek in on my inbox once every few hours â€" starting just after I tackle my first biggest objective of the morning.Whenever possible, I try to finish the day with answering emails to clear out my inbox each evening, too.3. I use the “touch it once” ruleNo more mindless email-peeking! If I’m scrolling through emails on my phone, I commit to answering emails then and there, too. If I’m not ready to deal with it, I leave it alone and save it for reading later.Otherwise, every time I peek in on emails just out of curiosity, I end up having to go back later, re-read them all over again and respond.4. I archive everythingI used to keep emails sitting in my inbox because I was afraid of losing a record of them. This was my biggest mistake!I didn’t realize there was an option between the trash can and keeping them sitting in my inbox, but there is! Get to know the archive button! It has become my best frien ds and I’m sure you’ll find the same thing. Now whenever any email has been responded to and handled, I get it out of my view by clicking the “archive” button, which sends it away, out of my inbox, but still ensures that it comes up in search. And now, with Gmail’s handy  nudge feature, certain emails that you’ve sent but haven’t gotten an answer back on will be brought back to your inbox a few days later. In other words: I do everything I can to just keep active email threads that require my attention in my inbox. Otherwise, they get archived and out of the way.5. I catch up once a weekEven though this new email regimen really has stuck and changed my work life for the better, nobody’s perfect. So if I haven’t cleaned out my inbox by the end of the week, I always try to reserve an hour at the end of the day on Friday to finish the job. There’s no way I could be perfect about achieving inbox zero every day, so giving myself these catch-up days is absolutely essenti al to stay on track.Want to give your inbox a detox this season?Give it a go and see if you can set your inbox up for better management this year. Just remember: don’t let perfection be the enemy of your progress. Stay diligent, but also have patience with yourself. Change is hard, but if you take it slow and steady, it can stick for you, too. This article was originally published on BossedUp.

Job Search Tips for Introverts

Job Search Tips for Introverts Job Search Tips for Introverts For introverts, job searching comes with a unique set of challenges. After all, introverts notably feel sapped after group gatherings, are frequently described as reserved, and can struggle to make small talk. This combination of characteristics can make interviewing, in particular, difficult for the personality type. If this description sounds familiar, you may be an introvert yourself. As with any job seeker, finding a work environment and job thats comfortable and allows you to flourish is important for your happiness and success. Get advice for navigating through every step of the job application process, from cover letters to interviews, as well as tips on how to identify jobs that are introvert-friendly. How to Identify a Job That's Right for You Laurie A. Helgoe, author of Introvert Power: Why Your Inner Life Is Your Hidden Strength, writes that …any environment that consistently leaves you feeling bad about who you are is the wrong environment. Its important for introverts to find a company culture and work responsibilities that fit well with their personality. Work can be challenging, but should not make you feel miserable. As You Search, Look Carefully at ?Listings for Clues. The job and company description, as well as the requirements mentioned in the posting, often reveal a lot. Does the listing describe employees as working and playing hard? Or does it mention a weekly employer-sponsored social get together? Introverts often avoid group gatherings, preferring solitude or one-on-one socializing. Be aware that while participating in work-related social activities may be voluntary, opting out may limit your ability to flourish at the company. Seek Positions That Cater to Your Strengths ? As an introvert. Introverts do well working independently, but also typically flourish on collaborative projects. A listing looking for a team player might be a good fit. Jobs that need people that are detail oriented are also ideal for introverts. Look for positions that are a strong match for your qualifications for a job. Emphasize Your Qualifications in Your Cover Letter In your cover letter, you will want to highlight your relevant experience and accomplishments. But a cover letter is also an opportunity to emphasize your particular personality traits and soft skills. As an introvert, you may do well working independently, have high attention to detail, and an ability to focus and get through even the more tedious aspects of a project. Give examples of ways these abilities â€" or others â€" have been beneficial to projects or employers.   Preparing for an Interview as an Introvert Ward off interview jitters with advance practice and prep. Learn tips on  how to prepare for an interview as an introvert, including advice on scheduling interviews and how to answer unexpected questions. And keep in mind one major advantage introverts have in interviews: typically, introverts are excellent listeners. Use this ability to get a sense of the interviewers wants and needs for the job, and to tailor your answers accordingly. Interview Your Interviewer Regardless of personality type, you should always interview your interviewer. A job interview is not a one-direction conversation. Ideally, you will leave the interview with a clear sense of the responsibilities of the position, what you would do on a day-to-day basis, the structure of the team, and the company culture. As with your analysis of the job posting, look for signs that the position is a good fit for your personality.

How to be the best listener in your office

How to be the best listener in your office How to be the best listener in your office We place so much importance today on tweeting, posting, sharing and commenting that we forget about the most important verb in the workplace.Listening.This is not a third-grade lesson in making friends. We know we’re supposed to listen to each other, but how often do you actually sit quietly, put away your phone and hear every single word someone has to say?Probably not often enough. The best leaders at a company give their employees the floor and the time of day. They are patient, don’t interject and use employee feedback to drive the business forward.Yes, bosses are in charge but that doesn’t mean they need to dominate every conversation. How do you, as a leader (or emerging leader), develop expert listening skills? There are two steps: Develop a “listening mindset” Practice practice practice What’s a “listening mindset”?First and foremost, you don’t listen to employees so you can jump in and tell them what’s what. You follow their every word so you can follow up with thoughtful questions to take the conversation deeper. The dialogue is a great opportunity to use my “6 Most Powerful Words in Networking.” They are: WHO WHAT WHEN WHERE WHY HOW Rather than jump in and take over the conversation, think about the questions you can ask that relate to what the person said most recently.Wrong way to listenEmployee: The Richards account has been difficult from the start, and it’s obvious our team wasn’t on the same page.Boss: I had a feeling the Richards project would be a problem because we’re had issues with other members of the Richards team in the past. This is what you need to do from now on…The employee was on the verge of explaining what went wrong and, perhaps, offering a solution to a client management problem. But the boss pretty much took over the conversation and never truly listened.Right way to listenEmployee: The Richards account has been difficult from the start, and it’s obvious our team wasn’t on the same page.Boss: Why do you think it’s been difficult?Employee: Well, we struggled to find times for everyone to meet so we had trouble communicating and keeping everyone on the same page.Boss: How do y ou think everyone should have stayed in communication?Employee: I think it was too much to ask the Richards team to meet in-person twice a month. Maybe once a month and regular conference calls instead?Boss: I like that idea. Good thinking. The boss allows the employee to talk further by asking questions (why and how are two of my “Six Most Powerful Words in Networking”).A leader at a company doesn’t need to create brilliant ideas out of thin air. Why not listen intently to your team and let them share insights that can guide the organization? The only way to gain new perspective is to stop what you’re doing and fall into a “listening mindset.”Say to yourself, “I am going to be the listener and questioner for the next few minutes.” Let’s see what intel I can uncover.Leader and Listener. Two words that look and sound awfully similar. There’s a reason for that. This  column  first appeared on  DannyhRubin.com.

Elizabeth Taylor was a great actress and even better negotiator

Elizabeth Taylor was a great actress and even better negotiator Elizabeth Taylor was a great actress and even better negotiator We’re all working harder than ever to  repair the gender pay gap  and ensure women are compensated fairly for our hard work and kickass talent. As we participate in  Equal Pay Day  and call on our local lawmakers to  demand  wage reform, it’s also important we continue to empower each other and educate ourselves on  how to ask for a raise  and effect change for  working moms,  creative entrepreneurs, and everyone else! Another way to make sure we’re being treated fairly in the workplace? Learn from those fearless, confident women who’ve come before us.Elizabeth Taylor  was a trailblazing businesswoman in the entertainment industry - with her role in  Cleopatra  in 1963 she became the first woman to negotiate (and receive) a $1 million salary. The actress was also an activist and humanitarian who valued her loved ones and helping those less fortunate. We got the chance to chat with Taylor’s longtime chief of staff Tim Mendelson to get the inside story on where Taylor learne d her negotiating skills, her biggest investment regret, and how she used her influence for good.Brit + Co: Before we get into the details, can you tell us a bit about your professional history with Taylor?Tim Mendelson:  I was brought into Elizabeth’s world in 1990 as an assistant - folding sweaters, hanging pictures, and running errands. Shortly after, she offered me an official position to be her personal assistant and insisted that I be her secretary, which was the most important professional role in her life. I was her chief of staff for 25 years.B+C:  When do you think Elizabeth Taylor became so business-savvy? Was there a particular moment where she took control of her career?TM:  Elizabeth was born with an innate understanding that every human being is important and that our true value comes from how we live, the things we do, how freely we give, and what’s inside our hearts. However, she was 15 when she realized the monetary value of the commodity that was “Elizabeth Taylor,” after she told the head of MGM studios that he and his studio “could go straight to hell” while he was berating her mother. Elizabeth assumed she would be fired but wasn’t. It was then that she realized the studio didn’t care what she did as long as her name made money for them. After that, she would fight in a negotiation over a single dollar, but then turn around and give it away to someone in need.B+C: Did she have a mentor or someone to bounce business negotiations off of as she got more successful?TM:  Her third husband, Mike Todd, was a master negotiator, and she learned quite a bit about dealing in business from him, but the biggest lesson she learned came after he passed away in a plane crash. She was filming  Cat on a Hot Tin Roof  at the time, which was to be her last with MGM. She’d originally had one more film left in her contract, but Mike got MGM to drop it so that he and Elizabeth could make movies together. As soon as she finished with  Cat, she went to say goodbye to everyone at the studio, and they handed her another script. When she reminded them that they’d made a deal with Mike to release her early, the studio exec said, “That was on a handshake, and Mike’s dead. Here’s your last film, honey,” and it was playing a call girl. After that, Elizabeth made sure to get everything in writing, and she was careful to go over each deal point herself. She wasn’t shy about asking questions or pushing back on the parts she didn’t agree with. Elizabeth also asked confidently for more where it was in her favor.B+C: Taylor is known for her incredible work with AIDS research - she helped found amfAR - during a time where there was a lot of fear surrounding HIV and it wasn’t exactly lucrative to start an AIDS foundation. How did she use her business savvy to help with her charitable causes?TM:  Elizabeth was clever to use her fame in combination with her personal life to make money for the cause. She sold the photos f rom her wedding, held at Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch, to Larry Fortensky for a million dollars and used it as the seed money to start The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation. She also “gave” her 65th birthday to ABC Networks to make money for her AIDS foundation.B+C: How did she invest her money? We know she was a huge fan of fabulous jewelry!TM:  One of Elizabeth’s smartest money moves was owning her own jewelry. Whenever Elizabeth had concerns that she was spending too much, she would just say, “Oh well, it will be good for the sale!” and bought it anyway. How right she was! Her jewelry sold through Christie’s auction house for record-breaking numbers. Elizabeth also told me about how Richard Burton referred to her two Monet paintings as “Monet in the bank,” meaning they will always go up in value and are as good as cash. There were times when Elizabeth sold things, but always for a good reason. She sold her 69-carat Taylor-Burton diamond while she was married to John Warner to help pay for his senate campaign. He won! Another example of how Elizabeth invested in people.B+C: How do you think this kind of mentality can translate to those of us who aren’t, uh, world-famous movie stars? Are there lessons to be learned, no matter where you are in life?TM:  Every woman can celebrate and invest in themselves. Sign up for a class to further your education or help develop skills in something you feel passionate about. Buy a piece of art that inspires you or just makes you feel good - it doesn’t have to be a Monet. Invest in others by mentoring and supporting women who are in need. Approach business decisions by staying true to yourself, and believe that it will all come to you when the time is right. Sometimes, we just need to stay focused for a little bit longer and practice patience. For example, when I first started working for Elizabeth, I had no idea where it would lead. I just took a chance as the opportunity was there for me. Today, as much as I want Elizabeth back, at least I get to talk about the qualities that made her special and hope that it will inspire others to live their lives fully empowered. I’m also grateful to be in a position to continue the work she did to help people with HIV and AIDS and to carry out her wishes as best as I can. Elizabeth said, “Follow your passion, and the things you need will come.”B+C: Can you talk to us about Taylor’s negotiation style and how other women could use it in their own lives?TM:  Elizabeth played it very serious when she was in a negotiation. It’s like she was going into battle, and she could be quite a warrior. She had great strength in her stillness, and she used it often. Elizabeth did not back down for any reason, but she listened more than she spoke, and when she did speak it was with great intention. If the other side had a good point that she agreed with, she let them have it.She certainly used charm as well, but judiciously and carefully. She h eld back as much as possible. One thing she never showed in negotiations was weakness or vulnerability. Elizabeth held her ground and didn’t back down until she got everything she wanted. She also always made sure that there was something in it just for her. A gift, like a piece of jewelry. With that in mind, Elizabeth would encourage every woman in a negotiation to use whatever makes her special to articulate why she deserves that salary, raise, or promotion. Embrace what you love and find what drives you with the same kind of unapologetic passion that Elizabeth had. Know what you’re fighting for when you walk into the room, and know that you never get anything if you don’t ask for it - be bold and ask for what you’re worth. Own your territory and make yourself indispensable.B+C: Can you talk specifically about the negotiation for  Cleopatra? How do you think the lessons she learned there can be translated in a broader sense?Elizabeth knew her value and her price. After bei ng at MGM for so much of her life and having made so many films, she at least wanted a break from it all. Fox was relentless about her playing Cleopatra, so she asked for an astronomical amount of money, thinking they would go away and leave her alone. They agreed to pay her a million dollars, and the rest is history. She was the first actress to do so, and it became her new standard fee throughout the ’60s and ’70s. Some time later, Elizabeth was quoted as saying, “If someone is dumb enough to pay me a million dollars to make a film, I’m certainly not dumb enough to turn it down.”Sometimes you have to really go for it and be willing to walk away with the belief that something better will come along. In the case of  Cleopatra, Elizabeth had nothing to lose. People don’t respond well to desperation. It can be scary if you really need the money, but confidence and courage work better in any negotiation. Don’t let them see how you are really feeling.B+C: Is there one busi ness or career decision that she regretted? What do you think she would’ve done differently?TM:  Elizabeth was always so true herself that she didn’t have regrets. Sometimes we make decisions that don’t work out, but we learn much more from our mistakes than our successes. What we perceive as a mistake can be a great opportunity for lessons that we wouldn’t get otherwise. “Onwards and upwards,” she would say. However, when Andy Warhol did the “Liz” series of 13 silkscreens, he offered to let her buy one for $500,000. She wanted it as a gift, seeing no reason to pay for an image of herself. In 2011, “Liz #5” sold for $26,962,500 by Phillips de Pury auction house. Although the sale was right after Elizabeth passed, there were similarly valued sales before that one. She certainly regretted that missed opportunity. This article was originally published on Brit + Co.

Learn About Position Grade Levels

Learn About Position Grade Levels Learn About Position Grade Levels Many organizations, institutions and governmental bodies (state and local governments, the federal government, and various agencies) use a position/employee grade-leveling system that helps differentiate between positions and standardize compensation across equivalent skill sets and responsibilities. The creation and maintenance of a system of standardized employee grade levels help ensure fair compensation for the same level of work across different departments and divisions. Consider, a typical software firm that employs programmers, testers, support specialists, sales representatives, marketing specialists, project managers, human resource managers, accountants and so forth. It would be challenging to ensure consistent and fair compensation across these many different roles without creating some form of standardization mechanism. Factor in the reality that for every position title, there are varying levels, including junior or senior roles for managers and individual contributors and you can imagine the potential for confusion without an organized system.  The position or employee grade level system does just that. Sample Position/Employee Grade Level Descriptions Here are examples of employee grade level descriptions from individual employees up to the Vice President level. Level A: Entry Level Individual Contributor Individuals at this level usually follow standard work routines. They also do the following: Work under close supervision (generally).Typically have very little decision-making ability.Have no budgetary responsibility or ability to spend without approval.Require (typically) less than three years of relevant experience. Level B: Experienced Individual Contributors Individuals at this level usually have procedural or systems experience. They also do the following: Work under general supervision.Make decisions based on established procedures.May have nominal budgetary responsibility or ability to spend.Require three to five years (typically) of relevant experience. Level C: Managers and Senior Technical Professionals and Individual Contributors Individuals at this level must have command of the procedures and systems used. They also do the following: Work to specific measurable objectives (generally) requiring operational planning skill with little direct supervision.Have considerable latitude for making decisions within their unit.Have involvement in the hiring, development, and related personnel processes.Have budgetary responsibilities (typically).Exercise crucial people skills.Require five to seven years of relevant experience. Level D: Directors Individuals at this level must have a thorough understanding of the theoretical and practical application of the principles of their profession. They also do the following: Work to broad goals for their area of responsibility.Have significant latitude for making decisions for their operational or functional units.Have hire/fire authority over team members.Have direct expense responsibility for significant departmental or unit budgets.Exercise essential people skills.Require eight to ten years of relevant experience. Level E: Vice Presidents/General Managers Individuals at this level are seasoned professionals in their field of expertise. They do the following: Give strategic guidance to the units under their control.Develop and direct short and near-term goals for their units.Exercise broad decision-making latitude within their functional units.  Have complete budgetary control over the functions under their control.Make use of essential people skills, including the ability to develop subordinates.Require more than 10 years of relevant experience. Position Grade Levels and Compensation Levels The above position grade levels will be governed by a set of compensation parameters described as a compensation grade level. Every different position level will have its own range of salary, from low to high. Additionally, there may be several layers of the compensation grades where the low, high and midpoint salaries vary from level to level. Consider that the Level C Managers category may include junior manager, manager, and senior manager designations, all with their own compensation ranges. Development of Grade Levels The process of developing, implementing and then refining position and compensation grade levels over time is typically the responsibility of the human resources department. Consider a vice presidents request to create an all-new position. She would work with the human resources team in the following process: Describe the nature, scope, and responsibilities of the new role in detail.Define the criteria for education and background experience required for the role.Evaluate the budgetary and decision-making authority of the role.  Look at the expected career progression for the position.Compare the role to others in the department.Compare the role and job parameters to outside examples. Once the above is completed, the human resources executive would decide which level the position falls into. After this position leveling is resolved, the compensation matrix would be applied and low, mid and high point positions for compensation would be documented. Marketplace compensation data for equivalent positions in similar industries would be used to compare the internal assessment to the external realities. The Bottom Line This detailed and involved process helps ensure consistency for the treatment of all employees, regardless of their functions or primary vocations.
